AutocadMayor confirms details of QEH, NCP deal

A deal has been struck between the City of Hamilton and the North End Community Housing Corp. regarding management of the Queen Elizabeth building.

Mayor Fred Eisenberger confirmed details of the deal Wednesday, just hours after it was first reported on the website Hamilton Spectator.

The deal will see the organization's headquarters — occupied by about 150 residents — moved to the former Eaton's department store at 29 Mohawk St.

The move is expected to begin by the end of March.

"It's an exciting time," Eisenberger said at a hastily called news conference in City Hall.

"I believe there will be people who will be disappointed, and I know there will be some who will be relieved. But for the most part people will be pleased with what we've done."

In a separate interview with CBC News, Eisenberger said the number of people at QEH will decrease from 600 to 50, with some getting jobs in the new facility.

"People will have a place to live that is as good or better than they have now," Eisenberger said.

The city says it will also spend more than $900,000 on improvements to the building in the coming months, including repairing the kitchen, bath, hot water heater and heating system.
