What Is AutoCAD and How Is It Used?

AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software application. History

Autodesk, Inc. was founded in 1972 as a company that produced engineering and architectural software. With AutoCAD, users are able to create, edit, and save draft drawings (also known as design documents or technical drawings). With AutoCAD, users can create drawings, specifications, and drawings in either an architectural or mechanical design style. The building or architecture users will be creating different types of objects such as doors, windows, rooms, furniture, walls, and stairs. The mechanical users will be creating pipes, ducts, beams, columns, etc. These objects are represented as geometric entities in the drawing. AutoCAD LT is a version of AutoCAD intended for deployment in the field. AutoCAD LT was created to address the needs of the direct retail market. It is offered to CAD dealers as a value-added version of AutoCAD.

A feature referred to as "AutoCAD LT for Windows" refers to the fact that it is a version of AutoCAD delivered as a Windows installable media. As such, it is intended to run on a Windows 7 or newer PC. A feature referred to as "AutoCAD LT for Mac" refers to the fact that it is a version of AutoCAD delivered as a Mac installable media. Other features

The company had, at times, tried to develop these functions using their Inventor software, but it never proved to be a cost-effective solution.

The company now provides BOMDO, a stand-alone software product that provides parametric 3D model creation and design capabilities.

Autodesk has developed AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT for Windows for use in the Windows operating system. The Windows operating system supports three vector graphics formats, and AutoCAD LT for Windows runs in native mode only using one of the three, WMF.

The Windows operating system supports file formats for vector-based applications. These formats are Windows Metafiles (WMF), Windows Imaging Format (WIM) and Portable Network Graphics (PNG). AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT for Windows support the following vector formats:
