**Starting Photoshop**

We'll start by opening up the camera image you purchased from the last tutorial. The following exercise shows you how to open this image in Photoshop.

1. Open up your browser and go to . You should see a short list of examples on the right side of the screen. Scroll down and locate **Photoshop Tutorials**.
2. Find the **Place image into project** image, and click on it.

You'll see that there are some boxes already set up. These are the defaults for starting a new project. Make sure your **paper** is set to **photoshop prints** and set the **size** to **sheet** (8.5" × 11" or 11" × 17").

3. You also have some layers already configured. Layers let you create multiple masks, which allow you to apply different types of effects to different areas of your image. Make sure **create layers** is selected (the crosshairs).
4. Click on the **Image** tab and then on **Open**. You'll now have an image open in Photoshop. It's a bit larger than the document you'll be working with, so if you don't have it fit on one

There are two free download options to choose from: Photoshop Elements and Photoshop Elements Starter.



Although the two software offer the same features, they are available at different price points, which affects the different features they include.

The Free version of the software (Adobe Photoshop Elements)

Version 12 of Elements now includes some of the more advanced features of the Pro version. However, the version 12 and the version 11 of the software cannot be used in tandem. To upgrade, you must upgrade from version 10 of Elements to version 11, then to version 12. If you upgrade from version 10 to version 11, you cannot also upgrade to version 12, because there are compatibility issues. That said, it is easy to upgrade from version 11 to version 12.



In addition to being a great beginner program, Elements is a great choice for anyone who wants to work in a more flexible environment than Photoshop.

Features found only in the Free version

No support

Starter version only supports Mac OS X 10.3 or later. The free version of the software does not support this version of the OS.

Software not supported by the software store

Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 is not currently in the Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop store for Windows PCs. If you require Photoshop Elements as a part of the suite, and you use a Mac, you should get the discounted version of Photoshop Elements 11. However, that version only works on the macOS version of the software.

The price of the software

The free version of the software comes with a number of features that might be useful for photographers and web developers. However, the basic features found in the free version are essentially those found in Elements, the more expensive version of the software.

The elements package and the starter version come with the same number of features, but the price difference is obvious. You must pay to upgrade the software.

John Cameron (born 1959) is a Indigenous Australian artist. He was born in South Australia. He attended the South Australian School of Arts at the University of Adelaide, with fellow Indigenous artists Terence Multon, Paul Holmes, Ian Ward and his wife who is also an Aboriginal artist and teacher, Neila Rima Matthews.

Cameron's work comprises sculpture, ceramic sculpture, painting, weaving, jewellery, lithography and printmaking. He lives in Adelaide, where he works as a teacher.

He has been a contributor to the 1992 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (now the Archibald Prize) and has been shortlisted in 1996 and 2006.

Military strategic studies during the Twentieth Century have tended to focus on the major conflicts and inter-war periods between great powers – Germany, Italy, Japan, United States, Britain, France – and then on the Cold War between the superpowers – America and the Soviet Union. In this period, the wars and military exploits of the likes of King Frederick, Italy’s Mussolini and the Japanese militarists were almost entirely ignored and the conflict between Germany and Russia was regarded more as a case of simmering hostility than a war of imperial expansion and conquest. War in the Arctic, meanwhile, had been largely left out of the picture.

During the 1920s, the Soviets appeared to be gaining the upper hand in European conflict. The Russian Revolution of 1917 had inspired the French, the Germans and the British to challenge their rule. The Kremlin was supported by a tight circle of close friends and allies – Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Estonia and eventually, in the 1930s, Finland. The USSR was also seen as the natural ally of the United States, which had helped to promote the Russian revolution. Indeed, to a large extent the United States built the Red Army during the 1920s and it was a natural ally of Stalin.

In Germany too, the Soviets were seen as a natural support for the leftist forces of the Social Democrats and Communists. In 1928, an American journalist visiting Germany declared that the Soviet presence in Europe was ‘a menace to the peace of the world.’ In 1936, the First World War veteran and US Senator from Wisconsin, Claude Swanson, argued that Stalin’s regime could not be tolerated.

In the early 1930s, the Soviet Union openly attempted to extend its influence across the Baltic, occupying Latvia and Estonia. In response, Britain and France announced plans to build a joint air base in Iceland, from which they hoped to counter Soviet aggression in the region by bombing the USSR. The Soviets responded to the air base scheme by aiding the Nazi Party in Germany’s successful seizure of power in 1933. The country that was seen as the natural ally of the United States, the country ruled by a tyrant who murdered millions of people in his own country in the course of suppressing domestic rebellion, became the enemy.

In 1933, a crisis broke out in East Asia. China and Japan formed a tenuous alliance and then signed an unequal treaty, which acknowledged the Japanese sphere of influence across a large part of China. Germany and Japan were allies and in October 1936,
