Have you ever run your audio through several DirectX Audio plugins, but what you got out the other end didn't sound quite a crisp and clean as the original? Well, all DirectX Audio plugins are not created equal, and you certainly don't want to take the manufacturers word on how good their plugins are (our plugins aren't the problem, it must be someone else). Sure, you could narrow it down through hours of checking, and using a whole host of other programs. But that was before AnalogX BitPolice! Just like our fine officers on the streets, BitPolice is looking to catch some poor quality plugins in the act of trashing your audio fidelity! Simply start two copies of BitPolice, and place one before the plugin you're interested in, and one after. Then just compare the results, and the bit's don't lie!
In order to use BitPolice, your application must support DirectX Audio Plugins, and must also support realtime processing (such as Paris or WaveLab). If your application forces you to render the output from DirectX plugins, you're out of luck and should complain to the people who wrote it, because there's nothing I can do to help you out.

Instructions:
1. Place BitPolice.exe in your application's directory.
2. Place a copy of an audio device driver in your program's directory, if you are using one.
3. Start BitPolice.exe with no parameters.
4. Click the button in the top right of the program to match audio to audio.
5. Match audio of one program to audio of the other.
6. The image will appear as it is matched. This is the result.
7. Click the "Compare" button to turn on "bit testing".
8. Click the "Analyze" button to turn on the plugin's analysis engine.
9. When the analysis engine has done it's thing, Click the "View Results" button.
10. Click the "Copy Results" button to quickly save the output.
11. Click the "Quit" button when you're done.
Note: This can take some time.
12. Open the Copy Results file that was created in Step 10, with any text editor.
13. Use File > Open to navigate to that file.
14. You're done, now you can analyze any audio plugin in your application's directory!

The following is a description of what BitPolice does. If you have a more in depth understanding of a topic, you can use the description to find the fastest way to get at it.

Where it's happening

Drag BitPolice from the Downloads area to your Audio Mixer. You'll notice two BitPolice windows on the Plugins list. One is in the process of doing nothing, and the second is running an analysis. If you cancel or close the first BitPolice, the second will continue running. This is good, because when you come back the next time you'll find BitPolice still running. However, if you're like me, and want to quickly inspect your plugins, you'll find it convenient to close the first window, and run a quick analysis on the second. As soon as you want to return to doing nothing, you can hit the cancel button again.

If you hit the 'OK' button when you first open BitPolice it'll open the dialog, if you don't it'll cancel.

What it does

BitPolice will analyze the second BitPolice window. Normally, this window looks like this

The Mixer tab shows you what audio is going into the plugin, and you'll see the audio being output by the plugin. When the plugin is running, it will show whether the plugin is 'drinking', 'on','ready', 'waiting' or'serving' the audio. The last state is important. You could then slowly increase the 'on' state to see how loud the plugin starts getting, before it just starts cranking up to 100% which is, sadly, how things can get. You'll also see the 'Drinking Duration'. This is the length of time the plugin is actually 'drinking' audio.

The Plugins tab shows you which plugins are used for the currently selected output channel. A bar graph on the right will show a visual representation of the audio available in the currently selected output channel.

The Output & Exports tab shows a graph of the currently selected output channel. There's a bar at the bottom that shows the 'on' level for that channel. If you can't see that, move your mouse over the graph area.

The Controls tab has controls on the right for Volume, Gain and Mute. The Mute function does not take effect until the output plugin is in its current state (see previously). You won't see any effects on
