(CNN) — Five years ago, Ben Smith bought a new house with a gaping hole on the back porch.

The house was in Mobile, Alabama, but the hole was a big problem. So Smith called a roofing contractor.

"He wanted to put tar paper on the hole," Smith said.

Smith knew that tar paper is waterproof, but he wanted a professional roofing company, so he called for a free estimate.

"They came back with a bid of $1,500," Smith said.

"I don't know what to say," he said, laughing. "And I live in the real-estate business. That's a lot of money."

But when Smith went out to the job site, he realized the roofer was doing more than just putting tar paper on the hole.

What happened next was even more heartbreaking.

"I said, 'Really?' I said, 'That's not true, is it?' " Smith said, adding that he realized there was no tornado.

"I called the roofing company and said, 'You want to give me a refund?' They said, 'No, you got a broken roof. We can't refund it.' "

This is how the story of the broken roof in Mobile, Alabama, is still going on.

"I never got my $1,500," Smith said. "My son and I tore the roof off, and it was nothing."

At the end of the day, Smith had a hole in his roof but the roofer left with his commission.

"No one got hurt," he said. "I'd like to know who he is, but I don't know who he is. I'd like to talk to him, but I don't know how to find him."
