Origins and history

After working for more than two decades in the graphics field, John Warnock, CEO and founder of Autodesk, was in charge of the business and financial aspects of designing a CAD program for the graphic industry and Autodesk was founded in 1982 to commercialize it.

Warnock started to sketch out a CAD program that could also perform the "high-speed", real-time tasks normally only reserved for the mainframe computers. In the process of completing the product, he developed a unique graphical user interface (GUI) that would use 3D modeling features to "lay out" the program on the computer's graphical display. In his words, "There was no real CAD program out there that had its own graphics on the screen for the user to see what was going on."

AutoCAD's first version was called Wallpaper Pro, or CADwall for short. It was released in 1983 and was the first product of its kind on the market. It cost $200, which would be equivalent to more than $800 in current money, and it was strictly for use on the home computer. When Autodesk introduced AutoCAD in 1982, it initially sold for $350. Although it would be several years before the product caught on in the marketplace, the company sold some 30,000 copies of AutoCAD by the end of its first year. Today, Autodesk estimates that the company has sold more than 100 million copies of AutoCAD since its release.

Over the years, the number of features in AutoCAD has increased to more than 20,000. In 2006, Autodesk began to distribute AutoCAD LT. This version is a basic version of AutoCAD, designed for smaller businesses and home-based users. It contains about 2,000 features, including those available in AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT. In 2008, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2009.

AutoCAD LT

AutoCAD LT offers many of the same features as AutoCAD, but with a reduced set of capabilities. For example, it can only be used to create 2D plans, drawings, section views, and detail drawings. If a customer needs to make a 2D drawing from scratch, they would have to purchase AutoCAD. It can be purchased for a one-time fee or for a monthly subscription.

Autodesk LT is a good deal if you intend to use AutoCAD

X'DRAW is a software program that emulates X'DRAW, the drawing file format used in AutoCAD, for MS Windows.
