Autodesk first began development on AutoCAD in 1982, in response to requests from the owner of a building design company that wanted a desktop-based CAD system to support his firm's internal drafting functions. He contracted programmer Gary Kildall, who subsequently became the company's president and CEO. Kildall wrote the initial version of the program for a newly released IBM PC running MS-DOS, while he was still working on another project. The first version of AutoCAD, known as DesignCAD, was released in December 1982.

Kildall originally envisioned his company's software as having the same characteristics of a drafting or drafting machine. However, he was pleasantly surprised to find that most CAD users were actually architects, draftsmen and engineers who simply wanted to modify or improve their design work instead of creating original artwork. Thus, the first versions of AutoCAD focused more on making a design easier and more efficient to create than on faithfully reproducing a drawing.

In addition to programs for creating the standard 2D drafting or architectural drawings, AutoCAD supports the creation of the many other kinds of 2D and 3D drawing, technical illustrations, and presentation documents and graphics that architects and other graphic designers might need. With AutoCAD, designers can view their work on a wide range of computer platforms, ranging from ultra-portable devices such as tablet computers and smartphones to large mainframe-class computers.

AutoCAD has since been released on several computer operating systems, including DOS, MS-DOS, Windows, and Unix.

Initially, software for AutoCAD was provided only to the first 20,000 customers. A license was sold for $50,000.

The company's first public demonstration of AutoCAD took place in San Francisco in 1983 at the "Drafting Symposium," a two-day gathering for architects and engineers. At that time, AutoCAD was a somewhat buggy and slow product.

By the time version 1.0 of AutoCAD was ready for release, around 1983, the company was experiencing significant growth. Its revenues were rising rapidly, it was opening new offices in Germany and Japan, and it had a software development team of around 100 people. To accommodate the growing popularity of AutoCAD and to meet the new demand, Autodesk decided to move its operations to the company's new headquarters, in San Rafael, California

Run Autocad.
Go to "File" -> "New" -> "Project" and select a project of your choice.
In the "new project" window, click on "Save" and type in a name and save it.
In the "new project" window, click on "Open" and navigate to the directory where you save the project file.
Double click on the project file to open it and click on "launch".
Click on "settings" -> "help" and start learning :)

This is all you need to do for the autocad to be included in the libraries.
Now, while in the autocad interface, make sure to go to "File" -> "Export" -> "Dxf" and specify the path to the dxf file you just created.
Now, once you have it exported, go to "File" -> "Import" and choose to import your dxf file.
Select the option "3D files" and import your dxf file.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that once you import your dxf file, you need to extract all the models from it. You can do this by going to "File" -> "Extract", in the "extract" window you will see your dxf model(s), right click on the model you want to extract and select "extract"

Now, go to "File" -> "Save" and you should be able to see the models you extracted.
Now, while in the "new project" window, click on "save" and navigate to the directory where you saved the dxf file.
Select the file "whatever.dxf" and save the file as a model in the.aib format.
