Useful Photoshop Tools for Photography

Photoshop Elements

The easiest way to improve images is to use the tools that are pre-installed in Photoshop Elements, or those included in Photo Mechanic. Here are some tools worth knowing.

Crop Tool



Photoshop Elements provides a simple way of resizing, rotating, and cropping your images. The default crop tool is called the Crop tool. This is a tiny tool that gets it's name from the selection of the crop area. It can be found either on the keyboard or by clicking the Crop menu > Crop Tool or the Ctrl + 1 shortcut.

The Crop tool looks like a right angle triangle and can be rotated around the crop area. You can also resize the crop area by holding down the ALT or OPTION button and using the keyboard to increase or decrease the crop area. A quick way of cropping images is to move the crop area over the part of the image you want to keep and then release the mouse button.

The Crop tool also has the option to use the current working document to align the crop area. This is useful when resizing images or combining photos into panoramas. Instead of manually aligning the crop area with the edges of the image it automatically aligns the crop area with the edges of the image.

Crop and rotate tool

Use the Crop Tool > Select the crop tool to select a crop area, rotate the crop area and hit ENTER or TAB or click OK. The selection will now be rotated and you can view the crop area by either hitting the Spacebar or the CTRL + ALT + U shortcut.

Brush tool



Holding down the SHIFT key while using a brush tool will allow you to edit areas of the image that are protected. This is mainly used to fix parts of your image that can't be edited with the free hand tool. The tool always paints around the free hand tool and is therefore useful for fixing, adding, and removing areas of the image you don't want to edit.

You can select a Brush size from the Pen Tool Options dropdown. It is possible to turn the Brush into a Soft Edge tool using the Pen Tool Options > Edge Button. You can also use the Brush with Paint Bucket to fill or paint areas of the image.

Why do questions always seem to be only partially answered?

I often see questions that show up as having the green check mark, and I see a comment with the answer. Now the problem is that the comment might be either of the most useful hints or really low-effort waste of time comments.
I also see many types of posts that don't get any answer whatsoever. I use to think that "answering" questions is a big part of the stack-exchange mission, now I'm not so sure.
Looking around, I have noticed that people just don't answer questions that they don't have the time to do. Is there a way to see a list of all unanswered questions?

Unanswered questions come from two sources:

Questions that have no answers at all
Questions that have a few upvoted answers that don't actually provide an answer to the question asked

Answers might be deleted or the question might be closed, in both cases the question is likely to disappear. There is no general way to tell unanswered questions that are still (substantially) useful to the community, so it is not possible to list all the questions that are still unanswered.
If there are 10 upvoted answers to a question where the author accepts an answer that does not provide an answer to the question asked, the question can be closed, leaving the questions with no answers or non-answer as the lowest quality.
If the question is not popular enough, there is no way to see if it has no answers at all or if it has a few answers with no upvotes, so there is no way to tell them apart.
The best way to find out what is still an open question with no upvoted answers is to read the question and the accepted answer and look at the timestamp. The answers can easily get automatically deleted, so if the accepted answer is the latest, the question can still be considered unanswered.

Advances in the endoscopic management of benign and malignant gastric outlet obstructions (GOO) have recently led to a reduction in emergency surgery. This study aimed to examine trends in the management of GOO. Patients who underwent emergency surgery for GOO between 1992 and 2015 were reviewed. Patients who underwent pre-operative endoscopic stenting or self-expanding metal stenting were included. Patient and procedure characteristics were compared. Three hundred seventy-five patients underwent emergency surgery for GOO, of whom 296 (78 %) received stenting. Complication rates were higher in patients who underwent stenting (2.7 vs. 5.2 %, p = 0.02). Stenting was most commonly performed for benign disease, followed by benign and malignant disease (benign disease: 56, 28, 12 %; malignant disease: 90, 23, 12 %). Emergency surgery was performed significantly more often for malignant disease (56 vs. 53 %, p = 0.03). Emergency surgery for malignant disease increased from 42 % to 57 % over the study period (p = 0.03). The likelihood of undergoing emergency surgery and the length of post-operative hospital stay were longer in patients who underwent stenting (p = 0.01 and p = 0.03, respectively).
