Creating an Easy Project to Practice Photoshop

Photoshop has such a vast array of tools that it's nearly impossible to use it in a meaningful way in one project. Trying to master the program without knowing what you're really attempting to accomplish is pointless. Instead, Photoshop can be an ongoing project.

In this exercise, I begin by creating a simple image and then load it into Photoshop. Later I load an image from your desktop and place it on top of the first image to create a collage. In the process, I explain basic commands and create a couple of basic images.

Photoshop is so flexible that you can change the image in many ways — you just need to experiment to see which techniques work best for you.

Creating a Simple Image

This exercise uses a color swatch to create a simple image of a turtle. Color swatches appear in the Palettes and Swatches dialog box, as shown in Figure 2-2.

1. Open the Swatches palette, choose the Custom 1 Swatch Color, and then press the OK button. This colors the image's background. The color of the turtle's shell is black, the color of the background is white.

2. Choose the Medium Hue Saturation Preset. This makes the image more colorful.

3. Enter the color Red using the Edit Color option and press the OK button.

4. Create a new layer and name it turtle.

5. Click and drag the turtle's outline onto the new layer.

6. The outline should fill the new layer.

There's an important lesson here. You can use the same layer name multiple times. Although the layer automatically appears on all of the top color layers, you can use all of the layers at different times to create different effects.

7. Choose Edit ⇒ Free Transform and drag the selection to the left about six pixels.

8. Click and drag a window around the image. The edit window appears with the transform handles (as shown in Figure 2-3).

Adobe Photoshop is a professional-grade photo editor. The program lets you use many types of editing tools to change photos for a variety of purposes. You can add effects, text, and colors to photos, make them more vibrant and add more detail. With Photoshop you can also create new images or modify existing ones.



Save your work in layers to edit the same photo multiple times without using layers. Save a new photo as a JPEG file, edit the file in another program, then open it back up in Photoshop to continue editing. You can change the resolution, brighten the photo, fix red-eye, lighten colors and more.

Make a photo appear bright, vibrant or artistic with the Curves tool. If you want to add blur effects, make a photo more colorful or get rid of imperfections, use the Photoshop version of Photoshop Elements (Elements). You can adjust the overall brightness of the photo as well as use brush tools to fill in spots where the photo is too dark or too light. You can also add various other effects to photos.

If you want to create professional-looking graphics, add text and drawing, use the vector tool. You can use the shapes and tools to create unique graphics and edit them easily. You can even create complex designs that can be saved in various formats.

The most common editing tools are the 8 feature drawing tools including the Rectangle, Line, Elliptical, Rectangular Marquee, Freeform, Polygon, Oval, Text & Type tools and the 6 feature drawing tools including the Rectangular Select, Freeform Polygon, Freeform Oval, Freeform Elliptical, Intersection, Bevel, and Dashed.

If you want to add artistic effects, the 9 feature tools include the 7 feature tools including the Blend, Burn, Dodge & Extract, Lasso, Magic Wand, Smudge, Sponge and 2 feature tool tools include Curves, and Emboss.

There are also 18 feature Adjustment tools and the 12 feature Edit Tools and the 13 feature filters.

Human rights groups have raised concerns about an increase in disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the southern Guatemalan region of Alta Verapaz, after the first case of suspected femicide was confirmed in connection with a five-month-old infant girl that was found abandoned in a garbage dump.

The Guatemalan Commission of Human Rights (CIDH) said the 13-month-old girl was brought to a hospital with a fractured skull, a black eye, and wounds on her back and abdomen, and the child later died from her injuries. According to CIDH’s report, the baby was killed with a hammer or stick and her body was dumped in a garbage dump.

The organisation’s president, Gianpaolo Sartori, told the local daily Guatemala Diario that there were many other cases and that they were likely to be further investigated.

“This is the first case which has been confirmed and the commission has been waiting for other similar cases to be confirmed,” Sartori said.

Guatemala’s interior minister, Olga Sánchez Cerrado, acknowledged the case in a press conference on Monday, but said that the situation was “much more complex” than it had been portrayed by the CIDH.

She said the cause of the injuries to the baby were not known, but that the girl was originally treated for burns to the legs and head in a hospital in Puerto Barrios, and then transferred to another hospital. After that the baby died.

The minister added that a suspect had been captured on Monday afternoon by the Guatemalan army and that there were currently two more wanted for questioning.

“This person is apparently linked to the municipal office of [Alta] Verapaz,” she said. “We ask that the citizen who has been captured to give us the name and family of the person.”

The CIDH said that it had registered more than 30 cases of “probable femicide” in Alta Verapaz since early December, but that they had been severely hampered by the lack of judicial records, among other factors.
