Practice makes perfect. Most beginners will make mistakes when editing photos. However, each time you make an adjustment, you're improving your skills.

You can download Photoshop from Adobe's website at `www.adobe.com` and use it free. You must register and enroll to get the most out of Photoshop. So make sure you have a sturdy Internet connection because you'll need to download the file and check it before you can install it on your computer. You'll also need to download the optional utilities described in the next section.

Photoshop CS6, which was released in 2013, is the latest version. Photoshop CS6 has many new features, including the addition of interactive painting tools, intelligent filters that allow the user to control what settings to use, the ability to blur, sharpen, or soften a specific area of an image, and improved speed and usability. The program also has a new graphics engine (Paradigm) that allows more realistic looking images to be made.

Some Photoshop features, however, are not compatible with the Mac version of Photoshop. If you want to take advantage of these features you'll need to use the 32-bit (Windows-only) version of Photoshop.

To use Photoshop for the first time, open a blank image as your canvas. If you're using a program other than Photoshop, make sure you have the document open in a window before you open Photoshop.

To import a photo, click to open the file you want to edit. On the Photo pull-down menu, select **Import** and browse to the location of the image you want to open. When you find the photo, press the **Import** button to open it in Photoshop.

When you launch Photoshop you're presented with a blank workspace, as shown in Figure 6-1. The first page offers a handful of options for you to consider. You can zoom in or out, choose from a few light and dark themes, change the color scheme, and add various layer styles and effects. You can also use the Eraser tool, which removes areas of a photo that you no longer want to keep. You can add a pen tool to draw or outline the areas you want to preserve. The rest of the screen is your canvas.

Chances are that you're not going to start with Photoshop Elements. You will likely be more familiar with something like Photoshop.

It's OK. Don't worry, we're going to take you by the hand and guide you through any necessary adjustments. The truth is, you won't see any huge improvements in your workflow until you understand the basics of adjusting images in Adobe Photoshop Elements. You need to understand what adjustments you can make. The point of learning the free version is to start with the tools that you can use to create your images.

There's a lot of information about Photoshop on the internet. It's easy to find tutorials on how to use it, but they can all be a bit confusing. Fortunately, Photoshop Elements has its own tutorial section. You can read tutorials on how to use specific features and achieve specific goals.

Image Adjustments

When you open an image in Adobe Photoshop Elements, you have a set of features that you can use to adjust the image. If you have used Photoshop before, you can use these tools to adjust an image within a certain range. If you have never used Photoshop, this can be a bit confusing.

I like to refer to these tools as the "basic" functions. These are what you use when you start.

There are tools that have a limited set of features, but allow you to make adjustments that are outside of those limitations. If the purpose of the image you are editing is to print on canvas, for example, then you would want to consider the inkjet printer adjustment tools available in the toolbox.

When selecting an adjustment tool, you'll see several pop-up menus. Below is a description of each pop-up menu. Click on the arrows to see the options available to you.

The basic functions

This is a section of tools that contains tools that you would expect to find in an image editor. They all make adjustments within the standard range of adjustments. You should use these tools to start creating your images.

Creating and manipulating textures: Photoshop will be happy to create for you textures for brushes, text and shapes, but you can also edit, alter and re-use textures created by others.
Bump mapping is a feature that will create specular reflections for 3D objects. These surface definitions are often used to give rock, metal or fluid surfaces a nice bumpy and matt appearance.


Brushes, brushes, brushes. This is probably the most important tool to know how to use, and we will go over all the major tools in this section. Photoshop can work with vectors, but the main problem is that vectors do not follow Photoshop units, or pixels. This means you will have to use pixels instead, and that is the tedious part.
Vectors will look just fine on the canvas, but will be much less useful than the pixel-based brushes. Just to give you an idea, if I would draw a stroke with any kind of vector-based line tool, it would probably look like this:
The reason behind this is the fact that there is no way to zoom in and out on vector-based images, and there is no cropping either. Cropping would be quite easy with pixel-based images, but there is no way to move the crop tool on vectors. For this reason, we will mostly focus on the pixel-based tools.


Design space is a tool for making sure all objects in an image are on the same graphic layer. (This can be done in some other tools, but since Photoshop has a lot of dedicated features, we will focus on them instead).
Essentially the tool allows for selecting all the items and layers in the image and allows you to snap to any of them.
Illustration design: is a feature that allows you to manipulate the shapes, edges, and lines of an image. This is done by either manipulating them with the Pen tool, or by using the Shape Tools.
This is an important feature because it is used by the drawing tools (pencil, brush, ink, etc) to create the desired effects.
Object selection: is the main tool that users will use when editing their images. This can be done in several ways, but most of the time they will select everything in an image, add a layer, and then edit each item individually.
The problem with this is that you are not working with the original picture, but with a copy. In order to protect the original picture, Photoshop will lock items while you are
