1. Effects, adjustment layers, brush tool

Adobe's Photoshop has a flexible selection of options that you can use to manipulate your images. Effects are effects, adjustments, and actions that change the appearance of a photo. Actions are preset functions that can be used in place of manually creating a similar effect. Adjustment layers are adjustment tools that combine effects, brushes, patterns, or photos (a layer mask is included), and act as a menu for additional options.

When editing your photo, you may want to change it in a variety of ways. Perhaps you want to change the overall color scheme or a particular area.

The "Effects" menu is organized by type of effect.

Effects

When you choose to modify an image, start by selecting "Effects" from the "Modify" menu and browsing to "PhotoshopEffects.psd," a template that contains effects that combine with other templates to create a variety of edits and modifications. There are various layers within the template that can be used to create custom color combinations or textures.

When you choose "Blend Mode" from the "Filter" menu, Photoshop will show you a menu that will let you choose among different blending options. "Screen" option is a common blending option for different degrees of color mixing within an image.

Additive blending is the default image blending method. When this is selected, Photoshop shows all the effects layers on the image (painted images, for example) in an overlay; all the other layers are masked. When Photoshop is using additive blending, the visible layers are completely blended with the pixels underneath the image. Blending is based on the RGB values of the pixels.

Subtractive blending, also known as "Exclusive", is a type of blend where only pixels that are below the image are retained. Blending is done by modifying each of the RGB colors for the area below the image.

When I began with Linux, I did not fully appreciate its offerings. While macOS has a powerful tool belt for image editing, Linux was, at that time, a patchwork of “worse is better” apps.



While I loved my iPad and its easy-to-use graphics app, I did not want a $1200 tablet computer that didn’t run Linux.

I wanted a Linux computer that was portable and powerful enough to work as a graphics editing tool.



A year later, I thought about it, and I picked up my old Windows machine, which I had kept for the sole reason that it had Photoshop. (I no longer use Windows, but I miss that ability).



I started searching and found a repurposed laptop from December, a not-so-hot old Pentium 4.

I bought it immediately and set to work.

Eight hours later, I took the machine apart, disassembled the optical drive, and started over.

After completing the disassembly process, I was amazed at how easy it was to replicate the physical layout of a Dell Netbook. I had a brand new laptop that was essentially identical to my old one.



Then I started to disassemble it.



Eight hours and a few empty Ramen Noodle boxes later, I started reassembling it.



I was still amazed.



What did I learn about myself in that one-week period?

I learned that I was more capable of opening a laptop’s computer and turning it into a photo editing station.

Then I realized I could do that with ANY laptop. Linux is not the only operating system that runs well on low-end hardware.



Needless to say, I bought a bunch of cheap laptops and began my journey into the Linux world.

Here’s my journey so far.

In fact, during a recess in the House trial of California Congressman Duncan Hunter, Rep. Loretta Sanchez was spotted wearing the same blue Obama 2012 campaign button she sported on election night, when she returned to her seat.

Despite the political connection, in the courtroom the party affiliation of the American public was on full display, as experts lined up to testify for the prosecution and for the defense.

One witness, a University of Minnesota professor of political science, was questioned by Hunter’s attorney.

Ravi Singh was asked by the defense if socialism is the polar opposite of free enterprise or democratic capitalism. Singh testified he doesn’t know, and couldn’t make the distinction without further explanation.

“I think that we’ve had a government that has used both,” he said, referring to the principles of socialism and capitalism.

The professor also testified that the Republican party was more in line with socialism in its philosophies.

The prosecution’s star witness, a law professor with a Ph.D. in economics, was questioned by Hunter’s attorney. Marci Hamilton was asked what the true colors of the Republican party are.

“It’s a very right-wing party,” Hamilton replied, also identifying the Democrats as the “far left.” She cited the 2008 election of Obama as proof.

The defense subsequently asked Hamilton if she agreed with Obama’s professed desire to reach out to conservatives and moderates.

“Many people in the Republican Party agree with that,” Hamilton replied.

If the jurors were paying attention to the witness stand, they may have been struck by just how similar the political leanings of the court, the prosecution and the defense were.

Peter Stark, a defense witness, testified for more than four hours, and his very similar political philosophy was clear.

“Neither party has stayed true to the principles of their party,” Stark said. “The Republicans have become stridently right-wing, and the Democrats have become stridently left-wing.”

Stark, like the prosecution’s witness, couldn’t clearly distinguish between socialism and capitalism, and they couldn’t believe their luck when they were asked about the principles of individualism and freedom.
