A lot of the stuff I've been writing about has been spurred by my own needs as a user of GIS systems. The
other day, though, I asked on twitter a question: "Is there any data set that
would allow a GeoSoftware Engineer to ask the question "Where should I put my
data to best enable a certain workflow??" I got a few interesting responses and I
thought I'd share them with you.
Let me start with one of the responses from my twitter follower Charles
Akerstrom: "Wikipedia has some interesting data, see "
I was intrigued by this suggestion. When I looked in Wikipedia I found a
wide range of content about file formats, including
details of the spatial information in the file. I also found links to a few
of the file formats that I was aware of. Wikipedia has been a great resource for
I could use some help in understanding which file formats can store data about
spatial information and which can't. Does anyone know?
The best way to get to the bottom of this issue is to check which file
formats really can be used for storing spatial data. I think there are three
options that I'm aware of:
A digital raster, such as TIFF, GeoTIFF, or JPEG, is a file
that can store spatial data about the image, such as the geometric location of
areas of different colors. The color data can be stored in the TIFF, GeoTIFF, or
JPEG file format. There is also some support for storing and displaying this
information in something called GDAL.
A geo-image is an image that has been extended to store
spatial information about the scene it depicts. The term geo-image was invented
by Paul Ewins at ESRI who didn't like the term raster because it was too generic.
He chose the term geo-image because it describes the data being stored and the
dynamic way it changes over time as the earth moves.
A database is a file format that uses spatial data
structures to store spatial data. The spatial data is organized into
geospatial objects that can be used to convey spatial information. I think of
this as the file format of the future. It is less limited than a raster file

Hi guys and gals, what’s up?
Well, first off, I’m sorry I haven’t been writing much in the last month but the last month or two has been a really busy one and things aren’t quite back to the usual ‘season’.
I will tell you why and then I will move on to catch everyone up with what has been going on around GidWin.
So, the reason it has been a busy couple of months is that in late summer we set a plan in motion for a forthcoming new forum. I’m happy to say that work has now been completed and everything is set up for a smooth launch and for a good end result.
We’re still working on the final kinks and little issues that come along and are (hopefully!) all wrapped up by now.
I’m also happy to say we have a secret ingredient planned for the first new forum section up. We haven’t revealed that yet, but as soon as we do, we’ll shout it out for ya… (squee!)
So, with that in mind, I’ll put you all up to date.
So, the first one is, of course, the big news (yes, I’m biased) that the WordPress Weblog, GidWin, is about to undergo a new and even bigger redesign.
The GidWin Blog is going through a major change.
Those who have been following GidWin’s development over the last year will have seen a lot of major work going on in the server-side of things and the place on the blog is going to be a reflection of that.
As you will see we have:
Moved everything from WordPress to GidWin
Completely rebuilt the blog.
Added a lot more functionality.
Moved over all the data we’ve had in our database.
The old GidWin blog will now be on the GidWin Weblog in the format it has always been.
The difference will be in the format. The old blog is going to disappear and be the first section of the new weblog as a fully working and fully supported platform for your submission.
At the moment, you’ll be able to find all the old GidWin content, along with all the

To see how well the app performs with lower internet connectivity speeds, read the 'Network Related' section below.
Netflix streaming is included, which works on devices running Android version 4.1 and higher. Users can use the free Netflix app to stream on their devices.
