A host of image-editing software is available for free. Most of these programs enable you to alter images, although the results may not always be as professional as Photoshop. In addition to the free programs, Adobe provides a more robust, professional version of Photoshop at an affordable price.

Using Photoshop

Photoshop has two primary ways to work with images: applying image-editing commands, and opening, saving, and printing images. I cover the latter in this chapter and the former in the following one.

One of Photoshop's strengths is its ability to edit a wide variety of types of images, including photographs, drawings, and bitmap graphics, all within one program. You can use Photoshop to create, save, and print different types of images. Also, if you save your image-editing results as either a bitmap or vector image, you can also edit the original, and Photoshop can regenerate the image as a bitmap or vector, which is covered in the section "Saving an image" later in this chapter. The following list covers the basic steps to edit an image in Photoshop:

You can edit an image by using the Layers dialog box or the Layers panel. Refer to Figure 2-1 for an example of a simple image where three layers are visible: a background layer, a layer with an adjustment, and a layer with a gradient. In the following sections, I explain how to use each of these options.

Save your image

At some point during your editing process, you may want to save the image you're currently working on. If you want to save your entire image as a single file, you have two choices: saving as a bitmap image or saving as a vector image.

Adobe Photoshop for Mac

Not all computers are equipped with the ability to run the latest version of Photoshop, so the updates are significant. You can use Photoshop CS5 for Mac, 6, and versions later.

Conclusions {#s0020}
===========

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of Hfq-TtcR interactions in *B. cereus* G9241, showing that Hfq protein binds directly to the *tet*(C) leader region, promoting its transcription and translation, and regulates *tet*(C) levels involved in the resistance to tetracycline, a clinically important antimicrobial agent. The role of Hfq as an RNA chaperone and post-transcriptional regulator in bacteria has been well established ([@bib11], [@bib22]). *Bacillus* Hfq is located in the inner membrane. Therefore, it has been proposed that Hfq senses environmental signals or bacterial stress and affects metabolic pathways or cellular division ([@bib10], [@bib31], [@bib49]). Our results suggest that Hfq protein acts as an important post-transcriptional regulator of *tet*(C) mRNA and that its importance in tetracycline resistance in *B. cereus* G9241 might be associated with iron acquisition in the presence of the antimicrobial agent or other environmental signals. Our future studies will be directed toward finding the regulatory mechanisms of *tet*(C) expression in *B. cereus* G9241.
