## Getting Started with Photoshop Elements

To get started with Photoshop Elements, install the program on your computer. You don't have to be connected to the Internet to do so, although you can if you like.

When the program starts up, it presents a blank canvas, as shown in Figure 11-1.

From here, you can open your first image. If you're starting a new document, press Ctrl+N (or ⌘-N) to create a new file. If you're editing an existing file, simply double-click to open the image.

You have some options to play with here before you start editing. For example, when you first open an image, it looks like Figure 11-1. The default image size is approximately 540, 540 pixels × 720, 720 pixels. You can change this by selecting

Because Photoshop Elements is an alternative to Photoshop, its features are slightly different than the original Photoshop. In this post, we'll list the features that are unique to Photoshop Elements and also provide a table for quick comparison.

Image Slice is a feature that lets you take the image or video in the active image window, place it into another file, and make the second file as an embedded image within the active file. The other file can be a new image, video or existing file. If you make a video, you can create an animated gif from it.

Stabilize has been added to the filter options. It brings a new level of image stabilization to images. You can make use of both Motion Blur and Radial Blur for stabilization.

These changes include the New pull-down menu, the New pull-down menu, the Folders panel, and performance improvements.

Coverage

Integration of the new CMYK Color management technology in Elements means that you can save files in CMYK. These can be used to produce color separations or other design sheets. CMYK Color management is also available for screening, printing, and prepress.

Imaging and Media

Increase the maximum file size in the Images panel to 1.5GB. This is the maximum size that Elements can open files on memory devices.

4K video support. You can now export 4K videos at 30 fps or 24 fps in the new file format MOV, HEVC or MPEG-2.

Supports Microsoft Mixed-Reality Capture. You can now import the camera files created by Microsoft's Mixed Reality Capture for quick import into Photoshop.

Clone Stamp
The Brush Tool is essentially a brush with a few additional options. The brush is limited only by your imagination; you can use it to paint in Photoshop, or digitally sculpt.

The Pen Tool is a tool similar to the Brush Tool, but has a number of unique properties, including Auto Erase. The Pen Tool allows you to draw freehand lines, which can be used to create pixel-by-pixel effects, or to easily draw straight or curvy lines. You can also use the Pen Tool to use on complex shapes, or for digital painting.

The Eraser allows you to remove objects from your image, similar to the Brush Tool. The Eraser has several varieties, including the Eraser, Cloner, and Magic Wand. You can use the Eraser to remove specific areas of an image.
The Dodge and Burn tools allow you to alter the colour of specific objects in an image. The Dodge tool lights up areas of a subject, giving that subject a more reflective look. The Burn tool darkens objects, producing a 'darkly rendered' look.

Background Eraser

The Blur tool is one of the most powerful Photoshop tools. While the Blur tool gives you the ability to get rid of objects in your image, the Smudge tool allows you to alter the appearance of objects in your image. You can draw with the Smudge tool in the same way as the Pen Tool, but it doesn't have a number of other Pen Tool functionality.

Shape Tools
If you have Photoshop CS2 or later, you can use the Pen Tool or the Shape tools to create shapes, including rectangles, ellipses, circles and freehand drawing. The shape tools can be used to create polygons, or to make straight and curved lines. You can also use them to create complex shapes.

Painting and Drawing
You can paint with the Pen Tool, Paint Bucket and Blob Brush. The Paint Bucket is similar to the Brush Tool, but has an unlimited number of pixels. If you've selected pixels with the Brush Tool, you can place the Paint Bucket over the pixels and paint over them. You can erase paint with the Eraser, or remove the pixels by using the Paint Bucket. The Blob Brush enables you to paint with a stroke of pixels, creating a blob. The Blob Brush is particularly useful for creating flames and other effects.

1924: The opening of the Boston YMCA, which had originally been built as the Workingman’s Institute (using funds from a $300,000 bequest from a steelworker and steel mill owner), is officially dedicated. It had been completed six months earlier, but in those six months it was burned down twice: once by a fire started by the wife of a steelworker who was angry at a YMCA secretary for trying to stop the young man from marrying her, and once by vandals angry at the content of the YMCA’s student reading groups (they had gotten into some fights).

Two prominent Roman Catholic priests play roles in the Y’s founding and early days: Father Denis J. O’Sullivan, who also founded Holy Cross School in nearby Allston, and Father John G. Broderick, a steelworker who was working as a steel mill priest and inspired a small group of like-minded men to start a Catholic religious institution they could call their own.

1925: The New York Times publishes a review of Paris By Night, the fourth film directed by the Russian-born Russian artist, author, and inventor Ben Sharpsteen. The film, which cost $63,000 to make and was the only one done without the use of a sound system, is described as a “series of hypnotic tableaux dealing with supernatural subjects.” It does not see a wide release.

1935: Boxer Jack Dempsey takes the sixth step of the championship double-round bout against Jess Willard. It is the start of what is dubbed “The Long Count” and will end with Dempsey’s seventh and Dempsey’s ninth and final round victory, giving him the 1938 title and the nickname “The Manassa Mauler.”

1943: A U.S. War Department regulation requires all women workers in war industries to display the “War Work Joke” on their war-related identification badge — a subject which becomes a recurring feature in this column. The joke, which in its most basic form is a copy of a 1942 picture of a woman holding a portrait of a soldier over a crack in the sidewalk, was designed by Torben Damm of the London advertising agency, J. Walter Thompson.
