Photoshop Elements is a tool designed for home and small-business users who want to edit images or design Web pages. It is a low-cost, simplified version of the Photoshop application, but the tasks that it supports are limited and — unlike Photoshop — it does not allow for such features as color correction, blending layers, or all the other functions that are possible in Photoshop.

The processing speed of Photoshop and Elements varies depending on the number and type of graphics files and layers that are opened.

Converting File Formats

Whether you plan to convert your existing files to the new format or you want to resize the images on your hard drive, you must first convert the images. You can use any photo editor to change your graphics from one format to another. For example, if you have a file in a RAW format, you can save it in a TIFF format or JPEG format. This section looks at converting one file format to another.

Converting image formats

Most people have at least one image format that they use frequently: JPG, TIFF, or other standard graphic file formats. The details of these file formats vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer; the advantages and disadvantages are not always the same.

Most image editors are capable of converting multiple graphic formats to the same file format.

For example, if you have a converted copy of a TIFF file, it's as easy to convert the TIFF to a JPG or another TIFF format. The following subsections explain how to work with several different standard image formats.

JPG

JPG is the most common file format for digital images, and it is also the most popular graphic file format. A standard JPG file may come from a digital camera or scanner, or it may be an image downloaded from the Internet. A JPG file is actually just a digital photocopy of a slide or negative. JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group and was developed by Kodak and Adobe. Most photo editing software includes the ability to convert files to the JPG format.

The JPG file format has a number of advantages, including that (usually) they can be read or displayed on most computer systems. Also, the size of a JPG file is usually smaller than the size of a TIFF or RAW file.

The JPG format has some disadvantages, such as that the images cannot have many effects. For example, color correction is difficult and cannot be performed in a JPG file

Photoshop is a cross-platform graphic design, photo editing and image retouching software. With over 100 million people using it today, Photoshop has become one of the most popular software packages on the market.



For our first Photoshop tutorial, we will learn how to load a photo from a camera or from a website into Photoshop. We will learn how to edit, crop, rotate and add effects to the image.



In this tutorial, you will be introduced to one of the oldest computer graphics programs in the world: Adobe Photoshop.



After this tutorial, you should be able to import photos into Photoshop from a camera, website, graphic design program, and other sources. You will also be able to edit photos by cropping, rotating, and adding effects.

Before you can edit your images in Photoshop, you need to open the image. Use the following steps to open a photo in Photoshop:

Click the photoframe icon on your Mac desktop.





Click on the + symbol at the bottom of the screen and type in a file name for your picture.

Open Photoshop Elements

Your picture should now be open in Photoshop Elements.











Use the keyboard commands Control + Z to undo the last action, and Control + Y to redo it.



Use the following steps to open an image in Photoshop Elements:

Click the photoframe icon on your Mac desktop.







Click on the + sign at the bottom of the screen.





Enter a file name and press Enter to open your photo.

Load a photo

The easiest way to open a photo in Photoshop Elements is to click the Load icon on the toolbar. This will open the photo in the new layer.

Introduction to Everyday Holistic Design

This course has been developed to give students the knowledge, skills, and understanding to design environments that work for everyone. It will consider the impact of design on different health & wellbeing factors, and become familiar with the basic principles of environmental design. We will look at an approach that is holistic and focuses on the way people interact with their environment. We will see how the design of the space, furniture and fittings can assist people in improving the quality of their lives.

By attending this course, you will be able to analyse user requirements and create an overarching design that supports the well-being of everyone in the household. We will work together to understand issues such as personal space, proportion, colour, lighting and furniture and group them into key categories. We will also look at household elements that contribute to people feeling happy, comfortable and relaxed.

We will also look at the role of the indoor environment, physical health, nutrition and mental health, and how our health affects our social wellbeing.

This course will be of benefit to anyone working in the field of interior or landscape design, as well as those considering moving into this area of design.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course you will be able to understand the basic principles of environmental design and holistic living. In doing so you will be able to make informed choices and design the right environments for your clients.

The purpose of this course is to provide you with an understanding of the importance of holistic living, the principles of environmental design, and the history of this holistic concept in our lives, from prehistoric days, right through to the 21st century.

We also provide a briefing on our project methodology and what information will be covered in the course.

The course will look at certain aspects of contemporary living, such as:
