Auto-Crop is an important feature, as it lets you see the image in the original proportions used to create the file.

Taking a video that will fit on your chosen screen size

You capture an image to use as a video by recording in the camera's Movie mode. Although there is a lot of information you can capture to use later in your film, you may not want to capture all that information. By reducing the number of pixels in the image captured, you can create a file that's smaller in size, enabling you to fit more frames on the screen. This technique can be used when you want to make a short video that fits your desired screen size, such as a YouTube clip.

Shooting in Movie mode

Shooting in the camera's Movie mode allows you to capture a short video sequence using either shooting mode:

• AVCHD (Audio Video Home Digital Video) mode: A video that's been recorded to the Canon Digital Camera Photo File (.DNG) format.

• MTS (Moving Pictures Experts Group) mode: A video file that's recorded in the MPEG-2 (.MTS) format.

For MTS recording, you can choose between two bit rates:

• 1500Kbps: A bit rate of 15 Mbps that stores the first and last images in the video file at the same level of quality as your image stills.

• 2.5Kbps: A bit rate of 2.5 Mbps that stores all images in the video file at the same quality as your image stills.

The file created by Movie mode recording is.MTS or.MOV. You can rename the file to.AVCHD,.AVI, or anything else you choose. The file you make is a mov file unless you rename it as a.AVCHD file, in which case it becomes an.AVCHD movie file. For more information about the.AVCHD file, see the section "Understanding Your.AVCHD Files" later in this chapter.

Because you record an image in the camera, Movie mode requires that you use your camera's lens to focus. So be sure to look through the viewfinder before shooting.

It’s time to celebrate Tofu Day (or, no, actually, it’s not time. But it is time for it to happen.) For those of you who need a refresher, it’s a weekly day dedicated to studying and loving the food we love: tofu!

Tofu was once actually called “soak-fu” and was made in large vats of water. It’s kind of like tofu soup, except you can’t remove the tofu from the vat; you can only make tiny cuts in the tofu, then set it in a non-hot water bath and let the magic happen. The key to tofu, in my opinion, is to not do too much! A lot of the people who rave about tofu are the same way about meatloaf: they want to do it their own special way and when it’s done, there’s nothing left. I tend to just like to make me some tofu, let it marinade, and then take it out and put it in a hot skillet to marinate a bit more. I’m going to use that recipe you’ve been drooling over for a while and see what kind of magical transformation you can do.

Does that sound like a proposal we can get excited about? Just a little bit? Okay, good. Go and get a big shiny bowl to stir your tofu in, because you’re going to be doing some stirring…





Tofu is a wonder of modern-day science. You can get it soft and silky like whipped cream, firm and chewy like a brick of squishy peach, or more rubbery and as hard as a rock. I’ve used the following recipe for years and cannot wait to make it again! Mix it all up and throw in some spices; this is a great recipe for homemade teriyaki sauce.

Tofu

The Recipe:

1 package of silken tofu

5 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed

2 Tbsp. coconut oil

1 tsp. salt (or to taste)

Pepper (optional)

Tofu Marinade:

2 Tbsp. olive oil

1 Tbsp. soy sauce

1 Tbsp. mirin (sweet Japanese cooking wine)

1 tsp. honey

1 tsp. grated fresh ginger (

Photo Editing: The Basics

If you want to edit your photos, chances are you'll start with the basic tools, such as Brightness/Contrast and Levels. These tools are designed to help you preview photos as they're edited.

Once you've uploaded the image, you may want to view it on your computer monitor or take it to a nearby store to make sure you like it before you print it or send it out in a package. Or you may want to edit it again later. The tools you use to edit an image depend on the result you want to achieve. Basic techniques include resizing, moving and cropping an image, sharpening, adjusting the colors, and changing the contrast, among other things.

If you want to do more advanced retouching, such as removing or adding objects, creating an artistic effect, or animating your photos, you'll have to use additional tools. For example, the Rectify tool enables you to select and reshape objects in an image. You can use it to fix problems such as a photo that's a little crooked. You can also use it to create special effects such as a photo turned upside down.

## Organizing Your Photos

If you have more than a couple of photos on your computer, it may be a good idea to keep them organized. This way, you can find them in a hurry.

How you store your photos depends on how you plan to use them. You can store them in folders or on a media card, and you can use a variety of ways to get them out of your computer, including e-mailing them, transferring them to a USB drive or mobile device, and putting them in a DVD or CD.
