A good starting point for learning to use Photoshop is to go to `www.photoshop.com`.

Photoshop's features can include image resizing, manipulation, creation, manipulation, and layered effects and layer adjustment. The following sections discuss these features and some less-familiar ones.

Basic image editing

Image editing in Photoshop involves the steps of image selection, which selects parts of an image, applying filters and effects, adjusting the image, and adding special effects.

The following list explains some of Photoshop's most basic features, such as resizing, cropping, and the adjustments that are made to images when you apply filters, effects, and adjustments:

Resizing: Resizing an image gives it a different aspect ratio and/or size. For example, you can make a portrait smaller so it fills the entire page of an 8½ by 11 page or a landscape image narrower so that it fits on an A4 page. Your image may need to be resized before you apply an effect such as a filter or an adjustment.

Crop: The Crop tool makes an exact crop of an image. Cropping alters the image area in the background, leaving the image in the exact area you have cropped. It also retains the original image data, unlike moving an image. The Crop tool has a wide range of effects, including size, rotation, flipping, and cropping. With the Crop tool, you crop the image area of an image, from the top left to the bottom right. You can also crop the area to contain a specific aspect ratio.

You use the tool by dragging the Crop handles on the sides of an image. When you release your mouse button, the image is cropped with the settings you want. (See Figure 6-1.)

Image adjustments

Image adjustments take a well-exposed photo and make it better. The adjustments can be applied to a single image or to an entire batch of images. Adjustments include brightness and contrast adjustment and color correction for skin tones, clipping highlights or shadows, or adjusting color or saturation.

The Adjustment panel enables you to make adjustments, make color corrections, apply Levels adjustments, and so on. Click the box in the panel to toggle through the options, as shown in Figure 6-2. (Adjustment sliders have been covered in Chapter 5.)

What are the most common Photoshop features?

Elements contains many of Photoshop's features, such as the powerful selection tool, layers, vectors, alpha channels, vector paths and most of the filters, warp tool, layer effects, and so on.

What's missing?

Elements doesn't have all the features that Photoshop has. Its layer and palette tools are missing, and the necessary functionality is provided by the Layers panel and Actions. The filters, brush, and so on, are provided by the Filter Gallery.

What's better?

If you can live with the limitations of a more basic software, Elements is a much better option for beginners.

Why does a process crash when using JVM 1.7u45 but not 2.2?

I would like to know why is it that a process in 1.7u45 crashed and did not in 2.2. The behavior was as follows.
In 1.7u45, I used a JDBC connection driver oracle driver. At each save or close, I used an interrupt handler routine to print a line saying that the connection was "terminated". The print used System.out.println( "Connection terminated" ).
In 2.2, it was the same code (the code, not the oracle driver), so it should have behaved the same. I use this code

Please note that it is my intention to use the interrupt routine because sometimes (and for most users) the program will terminate if there is a problem with the resource. It is thus also not applicable to not use this method as in 2.2.
Note also that if I pass a connection name (using the code that I use in 2.2), it works in both versions.

The difference is that in 1.7u45, the method Class.forName( "sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver" ) was not static and the implementation of Class.forName() was not synchronized (which could explain why it did not happen in 2.2).
As soon as I made the method static, the problem was gone in 1.7u45 but not in 2.2.

Replace character in string at specific offset position

I would like to replace the character located at a certain position in a string with a replacement character (ascii code 123 for example).
I tried to achieve this with the following function:
(string.pattern_substr(string, 3, 3)(replace_character)(substring(string, 4)))

This doesn't work, because'replace_character' is called before the string has been processed in'string.pattern_substr'
By the way, I've found the following question here on SO, which looks like it should be useful. The only thing that concerns me is that the supplied answer is written in C++ (since I'm a bit lost in regex patterns).
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.
