TIP: Photoshop has a default master image that is displayed when you open a document. Your options for changing this are limited, so make sure you have a default image, or create a custom master.

Layer-Based Editing

When creating an image, you begin by creating one or more layers. Each layer represents a different stage in the creation of your image. For example, you may want to make a photograph with several different items in it. You'll need to overlay the items onto the original photograph in order to create your final image.

Each layer is made up of multiple areas, called layers, each containing one area of an image (raster image). You can alter each layer independently by moving the associated areas of your image (that is, the layer) on the Layers panel.

The Layers panel is the most commonly used for editing purposes. Adjust the opacity, color, and blending of a selected layer to change the appearance of your image.

Using Camera Raw

Photoshop CS6's Camera Raw processing system enables you to change color, exposure, and other aspects of your photographs.

In previous versions of Photoshop, you had a fixed set of color effects available for use as you edited your photograph. You could only use white, black, gray, and sepia.

In CS6, you can apply many more colors as well as other adjustments, including saturation, contrast, brightness, and exposure. You can further manipulate your image using the Curves adjustments.

Reasons to use Camera Raw are the same as for using other adjustment layers in Photoshop:
