When you open attachments in Outlook such as Word documents, the files are stored in a hidden location and are not removed. I created this small utility to change the default path so you can easily find and delete them.
Also, if the Outlook Security Patch is installed, many attachment file types are blocked and you are not allowed to open them. This free and useful utility will allow you to unblock the extensions you wish.

Change the default path settings for:
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), Personal (PST), Public
(PUB) or Shared (SHM)
Change the file extensions that Outlook allows you to open
Change the file extensions that Outlook blocks and removes
Configuration Manager:
Select and Open the Microsoft registry that you wish to update.
Select and Open the correct registry key to modify.
Optionally, you can click Browse to find the correct registry key.
Enter the new path name of the folder for “Microsoft Outlook 2000”, “Microsoft Outlook 2002 (XP)”, “Microsoft Outlook 2003”, “Microsoft Outlook Express 2003” or “Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2007/2010”.
Click OK to update the registry.
Important Notes:
Outlook will recreate the shortcut to the new path name.
You may want to change the initial location of “New Outlook” if this path is not listed in the start menu.
You may want to change the initial location of “New File” if this path is not listed in the start menu.
You may want to change the initial location of “Search Office Files” if this path is not listed in the start menu.
You may want to change the initial location of “Microsoft Outlook” if this path is not listed in the start menu.
If you change the Outlook application shortcuts and then you open a document that is on the new path, you may get an error message stating that the file is not saved properly. This message is caused by the fact that when you open the document, an auto-fix function is performed. If the files are deleted and the original path is not listed then Outlook does not know where to find the original path. If you open the folder again, it should find the file and fix the location.
In summary, these are my descriptions of the procedure to follow when using a new path.
Restart Outlook
1. Click Start, click Run, and then type Outlook in the Open

Find and Remove Hidden Files in Outlook
Protect your stored attachments by unblocking them.

Using the installer:
1. You will get a message box asking if you want to start the program. Click Yes.
2. You will be asked if you wish to get the correct version. Click Yes.
3. The program will update and you will need to restart Outlook.
Using the command line:
1. Run %systemroot%\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v2.0.50727\privileges.exe (found in %systemroot%\Microsoft.Net\Framework)
2. Click No if you are prompted by "Are you sure you want to continue?"
3. To see if the patch installed correctly, double-click %systemroot%\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v2.0.50727\Microsoft.SecurityPatch.Setup.exe
Pro Features:
You will be given a choice of different locations to search for attachments. You can select the following locations:
? Outlook Data Files\Attachments
? Outlook Data Files\Personal Folders\Attachments
? Outlook Data Files\Public Folders\Attachments
? Outlook Data Files\Comps\Attachments
? Uncheck any folder you do not wish to include.
While it finds the attachments, it will also update the attachment read permissions for you.
After it finishes, you will need to select each attachment individually and select Unblock from the right click menu. After everything is unblocked, you can right click on the attachment and click Delete to delete the attachment.
Conclusion:
Now that you have the knowledge of this free utility, you will be able to use it to protect your attachments from an intruder.
