Using Photoshop to Manipulate and Alter Images

Photoshop is a tool that enables the creation and alteration of raster-based images. This tool contains many features that enable you to build, alter, improve, or strip images of any file type — including JPEG, TIFF, GIF, and even PDF. The features available in Photoshop can vary depending on the features you activate.

The following sections highlight some of the image-manipulation features in Photoshop CS3, because, as the book has already mentioned, some of the earlier versions of Photoshop have limitations.

Building and Editing

When building an image using Photoshop, you can select the type of object that you want to add or replace using the Content-Aware Fill feature. You can also choose to replace a background object with a new image, or even rebuild an image from scratch (as if you had taken it by its component color channels).

This feature is invaluable for removing unwanted objects from an image. After you use Content-Aware Fill, you can easily adjust the fill to remove or reduce a skin tone from a head of hair.

In addition, you can use the Spot Healing Brush tool to modify and repair images, as long as the location of the problem area is within the image. This tool can also use a healing factor to detect, and even remove, color shifts and small areas of spots, dust, and other blemishes in the area.

Altering

You can apply a transform to an image to change the image's size, rotate the image, flip it, and so on. You can also apply a transform to distort the image. Transforms can be used to change the size, rotation, and perspective of an object in an image, and you can even apply more than one transform to an object.

A transform can be used to resize an object to any fraction of its original size. For example, if you choose to reduce an image to half its original size, the dimensions of the image become 1:2.

A transform can also apply a rotation to an object, as long as that rotation angle is less than 360 degrees. If you choose to rotate an image clockwise by 90 degrees, the image is rotated 180 degrees. The final step in this example is that the image is lowered by a factor of two,

Adobe Photoshop Elements can be accessed from both the web or Mac OS X. The regular version is a web application, but the Mac version is only available as a standalone app or a USB installation.

The Edit feature has the basic tools you need to edit images. Paintbrush, tools for non-destructive editing, such as the Black & White tool and the White Balance tool, are included. There is also a Colour tool that lets you adjust the colour of your image with the colour wheel.

You can add and remove filters to your images. Filters are the tools you use to create stylized images like the ones you might see in a magazine or on a billboard. You can also create your own filters. You can apply effects to your image. There are several effects like blur, distort, tilt shift and perspective and you can also apply them on certain layers.

There are over 100 additional filters.

Adobe Photoshop Elements can also let you add, move and resize layers. It comes with basic tools for that purpose.

You can also edit photos using the Painter Brush. You can use the Paintbrush to create new images. You can set the brush size, brush type and opacity.

You can also use the Paintbrush to remove unwanted objects from your image by painting over them.

The second feature is the Enhance feature. It has all the features you would expect a modern image editor to have. There is an Adjust Levels feature that lets you adjust the image’s brightness, contrast and color balance. You can also adjust the saturation and hue with a slider.

Arsenic trioxide: a milestone in the history of new drug development.
To avoid toxicity and long-term administration problems, arsenic trioxide (As2O3) was introduced into clinical practice as a drug of 'new paradigm' in the early 1990s. This agent appears to interfere with the bone marrow microenvironment, and gives rise to complete remissions of relapsed and non-treated patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). The molecular pathogenesis of APL is associated with the presence of a chromosomal translocation (t(15;17)) that creates a fusion gene (PML/RARA) involving the retinoic acid receptor alpha gene (RARA), which is thought to be essential for the differentiation of APL cells. Treatment of APL patients with As2O3 results in the rapid and irreversible degeneration of leukemia cells, and in the activation of nuclear matrix transcription factors and differentiation of the mature granulocytic phenotype. New compounds of'mono-chelation' theory, and their distinct mechanisms of action, are being developed, and include ATRA, hydroxyurea, and cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C). A recent improvement in the treatment of APL was the introduction of all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) in combination with As2O3. The aim of this review is to describe the therapeutic history of As2O3, from its introduction as a drug of 'new paradigm', to the development of the available formulations, and to future perspectives in the treatment of patients with APL and other hematological disorders.{
