Setting Up Photoshop

If you have Photoshop CS3 (or higher) installed, it's ready to be used right out of the box. If you just installed Photoshop, you may need to download updates to the program before you start. This process will ensure that you have all of the tools that you need to work with images.

If you have Photoshop CS6 or Photoshop Elements 16, you may be able to skip downloading updates. To do so, choose Photoshop ⇒ Preferences and then Updates (more details are in Chapter 3).

When you launch Photoshop, you can move to the About Photoshop screen. This screen contains information about Photoshop and information about the available updates. You can read more information about the updates that you need to download, their benefits, and more.

If you close the About Photoshop screen without making any changes, Photoshop will download the updates for you on the next open or startup of Photoshop. If you navigate to the Photoshop menu, choose Photoshop ⇒ Preferences, and then Updates, you can select which updates you want to download.

Most Photoshop users create custom presets when they first open Photoshop. If you do the same, you may need to download the updates for Photoshop before you create them. To find the updates, navigate to the Photoshop menu, choose Photoshop ⇒ Preferences, and then Update Center, as shown in Figure 2-1. Choose the Update tab and then Update to Available Updates to find out when the updates were released.

Photoshop offers many customization options to help you organize your information and images. You can customize the way Photoshop opens images and the way that it saves them. You can also create custom keyboard shortcuts, such as shortcuts that help you save, print, and export the files.

Creating custom workspace

If you want to open an image in a specific workspace when you launch Photoshop, you can create a custom workspace. However, you can adjust these options after you have created your custom workspace.

To create a custom workspace, follow these steps:

1. Choose Window ⇒ Workspace, as shown in Figure 2-2.

2. Click the New Workspace button at the lower-left corner of the workspace.

3. After the new workspace opens, click the Workspaces tab, and then

Adobe Photoshop Elements on Mac

How to install: To install Adobe Photoshop Elements, you need the latest version of macOS. It can be found in the macOS app store. For full instructions, see How to install: Install Adobe Photoshop Elements.

If you want to update Adobe Photoshop Elements on your Mac, you need to update macOS first. See How to update macOS.

What you need: To use Photoshop Elements you need a computer running macOS and version 8 or later of the macOS operating system. You need the latest version of Adobe Photoshop Elements to use your Mac.

The minimum RAM requirement is 2 GB.

You need at least a 2 GB (3 GB of 4 GB) of RAM. This is because Photoshop Elements uses RAM rather than disk.

You can edit or print up to 4 GB of photos or 2 GB of 4-GB photos in one go.

If you upgrade your RAM, Photoshop Elements doesn't need to be reinstalled. The software will be updated automatically.

How to use Photoshop Elements

You have two ways to use Photoshop Elements: either as a web browser extension or in a web browser.





In a web browser

First, you need to add an extension to your browser. It must be an extension that offers the same browser features as Photoshop Elements.

After installing a browser extension, you must enable it. You can either do this by searching for the extension in your browser or from within it.

Next, you need to open Photoshop Elements. Here are the options you can choose from in the main menu:

On the left-hand side, there are two buttons that say "Edit". This is where you can open or edit the images in your library.

The right-hand side, next to the section for the windows you use, contains the tabs.

These open the files you are editing in the windows behind them.

Just a few weeks ago, I wrote about how the End of Life Choices (EOLC) bill HB 2273 was making its way through the Kentucky legislature, how it would require that death certificates and medical records be sent to the state, but not to the decedent's family. It was designed to benefit the state in exchange for a pittance from the funeral home industry. I explained that it was an offense to the family, but not a crime, and as long as the state was paying out money they would see no harm in it.

Well, as you know, the bill passed the Senate, but in the House of Representatives there was a great bit of drama over who would vote to concur on the amended bill in the House. Some thought the bill needed a number of procedural changes prior to a vote. Others thought that all the changes that had been made were fine, but needed to be placed in the House Rules Committee before being voted on.

The original bill called for the records to be sent to the Commonwealth, but with the amendment in the rules committee, the records will be sent to the state only, but the family will be able to get a copy from the state. The original bill had specified that physicians could not disclose the cause of death in order for the physician to get paid for the service. This was part of the problem with the bill. I had a feeling that was part of the reason the House Rules Committee changed it to simply say the cause of death cannot be disclosed.

If the funeral home industry is so worried about increasing requests for medical records, maybe they should lobby to eliminate the death certificate altogether. Why would anyone want the medical records of someone who has died?

I, for one, don't want to know.

If the death certificate isn't called a death certificate but is required to be sent to the state in order for the state to get the $500, then the state shouldn't be able to obtain it. After all, it isn't like the state is going to pay anything for sending it over.

However, if the family did have a problem with the medical information, they could be assured by the confidentiality of doctor-patient privilege. But, for what reason? Would the state be able to use the medical information to help with its own legislation?

Surely, the medical records would have to be anonymous to state bureaucrats, especially if the state has to pay out for the actual medical record. I suppose

Creating an Adjustment Layer is quite easy, and allows you to apply one of a wide variety of effects to your photos without having to use many separate layers.
With the Eraser tool you can remove unwanted objects from photos. It is often used as a creative editing tool to "colorize" or "brighten" an image.
The Smudge Tool allows you to blend colors, brush-style, to an image. This allows you to blur, soften, or change the color of parts of an image.
The Gradient Tool allows you to draw a gray or color gradient in an image. You can create a smooth, smooth gradient using the Straighten tool, or a non-smooth gradient by using the Spiral tool.


The Pen Tool allows you to draw or paint on an image. It has many options including line thickness, line width, line end style, and the ability to create curves and bezier paths.


The Curves Palette allows you to create smooth or angular softness to objects in an image. It also makes it possible to change your image's color balance and contrast.
The Burn Tool is used to soften or darken part of an image. It can also be used to erase part of an image, such as a hole you accidentally made in the background of your photo.
The Dodge Tool is used to brighten the tone in an image. It can be used to minimize flaws in your image, as well as increase the saturation of the image.
The Blur Tool allows you to blur part of an image. It can be used for soft focus, but also to create artistic effects.
The Grain Effect allows you to add or remove "haze" in the image. Using this tool you can give images a painted or blurred look.
The Cartoon Effect works similar to the Grain Effect.


With the Free Transform tool, you can move objects around and distort them in interesting ways.


The Gradient Tool allows you to draw gradients, otherwise known as color fills. It is very easy to use.
You can use the Color Range Tool to copy pixels from one area to another. It will colorize an area, changing the brightness of that area. It can also be used to remove unwanted parts of a photo.


The Gradient Tool can be used to draw very smooth and pretty-looking gradients.
