The image editing software Adobe Photoshop is part of the Creative Suite (discussed in Chapter 17). The suite is primarily designed for professionals, but it's worth considering because it includes an enormous number of tools. Likewise, the Photoshop Elements program is often bundled with other software like Adobe Photoshop Elements, so it's also part of the Creative Suite.

This chapter focuses on Photoshop, but many of the features described here work just as well in Adobe Photoshop Elements. (At the time of this writing, the Elements 6 version wasn't released yet.)

With Adobe Photoshop or Elements, a drawing is a _raster_ image that is composed of pixels, the individual dots and lines that make up an image. Everything else you see on the screen — the layer styles, brushes, text, backgrounds, and so on — is _vector_, or bitmapped. A bitmap gives you 1,000 times more detail than vector.

With the layer system, your images remain intact as you edit and edit and edit them. A layer is a semitransparent image that you place over an original image and then edit with the features in the program. In its simplest form, a layer is an image that provides an individual adjustment or "layer" for a specific area of an image. For example, you may add a lens blur filter to a subject, or make a specific area black and white. The word "layer" refers to the way the image is processed and organized. It's more than a color overlay. In the case of a digital photograph, it's like a cutout.
