Photoshop CS3 is the latest version of Photoshop and has thousands of features and a feature-rich learning curve. As a new user, just learning a few things like the difference between layers and the selection tool is a big plus.

The subject of this article is Adobe Photoshop CS3. This is a great program for both beginners and advanced users.

The Basics

Getting Started

To start Photoshop, click on "Photoshop CS3" on the "Start" menu and launch it.

Once started, the first thing you'll notice is that the program has a very clean, stylized look that isn't the same as Adobe Illustrator. The interface is divided into four areas:

The toolbar

The Layers area

The History area

The toolbar contains all of Photoshop's tools, buttons, and panels. The tools are organized into four groups:

The basic tools, such as color sliders and paintbrushes, are found at the top of the toolbar

The Basic tools include the command area, and the Adjustment Tools.

The Adjustment Tools give you access to non-pixel-based adjustment tools such as Levels, Curves, Blur, Brightness/Contrast, and the Hue/Saturation adjustment tools.

The Basic tools are included along with other items that help you manipulate and alter your digital images.

The Zoom tool

The Zoom tool is used to view the image in closer detail.

The Rectangle tool is used for drawing exact boxes around the edges of the image, for cropping or for pasting in a new document. It uses the four-way arrow cursor to direct movement.

The Ellipse tool is used to draw perfectly round boxes. It can be used to create different size boxes by holding down the spacebar. As you draw boxes, you can see a preview of the result and the area you are working with (marked in blue) on the image.

The Lasso tool is used to draw rectangles, ovals, and freeform shapes. It uses the four-way arrow cursor and

Features

The article covers the most useful features of Photoshop Elements. At the time of writing, macOS versions are only available, but other platforms will be added in time as well.

Photoshop Elements is similar to the traditional version of Photoshop, but the interface is simplified, so you can either use keyboard shortcuts, or the zoom bar to scroll through the different tools.

Photoshop Elements is a tool that was designed for both professionals and hobbyists, so it offers different tool windows for different tasks: the Organizer for managing projects, the Layers for drawing and working on groups, the Filters and Adjustments for customizing images with different effects, the Adjustments window for changing colors and brightness, and the History for scrolling back in the past.

There are also different Creative Filters, such as the Oil Paint and Granite Paint filters, that can be used to create interesting images using the brush strokes of a professional artist.









Organizer





The Organizer is used for creating a project, retrieving images from your computer or importing them from the internet. It consists of four main windows: the Thumbnails, Collections, Layers and Stacks.









The Thumbnails window, which is visible when opening the Organizer, is full of previews of the images that are created as parts of a project or imported. You can select several of them at the same time to export them, or you can also scroll through each image to get an idea of its size.

The Collections window lets you create projects containing different types of images. For example, you can save an image to a collection called “Letters and Comic” and reuse it later in your project. This allows you to reuse images in different projects.

You can add a new collection from the Organizer by using the icon at the top-right corner of the window. For instance, you can create a collection called “Animals” and organize it with animals as the main part of your project.

The Layers window also lets you create different layers for your images, grouping them together in different projects. You can organize these layers according to the categories that you define, or as they are in real life. For example, you can make a group called “Nature”, and use the “Correct my Vision” filter to make the flowers green.

Types of Brushes
Have a look at some of the different kinds of brushes in Photoshop and what they're best for.


Liquify

Liquify is one of the newest filters in Photoshop, but it's already a useful and robust tool. You can use this brush to adjust the distribution of opacity in a layer and distort it. A brush like this makes Photoshop brushes even more versatile than ever before.


Radial Blur

If you want a tool to blur or soften your image, try the Radial Blur. It applies a blur to your image, but does so very gradually rather than with a single brush stroke. This means that your image won't look pixelated, but will instead have a much smoother feeling to it.
The Pencil tool allows you to draw with a soft, precise pen. You can set a brush size and the opacity of the paint in a single brush layer. You can even apply a different brush to different areas of the layer. The Pencil tool is a brush that you can use only in a layer.

Gradient Tool

The Gradient tool in Photoshop is a brush-like tool that lets you create a variety of gradient effects. You can use the Gradient Tool to apply colors from one object to another, such as the three colors in the example below. You can also use this tool to create dynamic effects, such as those seen in the example below, in which a shadow is created on an object.



Invert Brush

In Photoshop, the Invert Brush allows you to easily change the colors in an image to a different combination. You can modify colors in a variety of ways, including with the eyedropper. Use the eyedropper to sample a color directly on the image, and the Invert Brush will display a preview of the colors that you'll use. Click and drag over the colors that you want to use, and click again to apply the new color combination. You can also set up a selection window and select colors directly on the image.

Flood-Fill Brush

The Flood-Fill Brush is a brush that allows you to easily apply or remove color, such as with the Ink Bottle and Water Bottle Brushes. The Flood-Fill Brush is one of the most useful tools in Photoshop. With this brush, you can remove color, invert colors, and apply a new color.

RESTful / AJAX / POST parameters

I am wondering how I would store a parameter that is supposed to be dynamic in a RESTful app. I am posting an AJAX request from JS and I have been able to store all of the other parameters fine but how would I store an user ID?

A:

You can always use POST, or use custom headers, setting a custom header to contain the X-UserID-Token header. If the user ID is confidential, you can use the Do-Not-Track header for example.

HTTP Request details
As noted in the comments, the X-* headers have to be set in the HTTP request headers, and the userID needs to be set as a custom HTTP header. The user ID can be anything (ex: userID=123), even if it is a secret, but it needs to be set in the headers of the HTTP POST request.
