By far the best name for Photoshop is the somewhat tongue-in-cheek, trademarked name of its creator and software developer — the Adobe Corporation (see www.adobe.com). It's also widely accepted that Photoshop was created first by a team at Adobe under the auspices of its Graphics Group; the name Photoshop then just stuck. Even still, the company has coined its own terms to describe different parts of its software.

Photoshop CS3 and all current versions of Photoshop are covered in this book. In addition, a slightly earlier version of Photoshop, known as Photoshop Elements, is covered in earlier chapters of the book, and is available from Adobe in expanded form for more in-depth coverage, as well as as a standalone program.

Understanding Adobe Photoshop Elements

Adobe's name for the newest version of Photoshop is Photoshop Elements. It's designed to be a more affordable version of Photoshop that uses a simplified interface (pardon the expression) that lets you do more without having to have a deep understanding of how to use the full version of the software.

Photoshop Elements is a virtual, tablet-based application that works with your computer using the Internet. It's also a good fit for people with small or limited digital photo collections who may find the long download times and clunky interface of Photoshop a bit of an encumbrance when they need to do anything more than just resize and crop a couple of photos.

Because it's a much more limited version of Photoshop, using it is very different from using the full version. It's worth trying the software out to see if it's for you. It's not a replacement for Photoshop, however, and those are the differences that you need to be aware of.

Getting around Photoshop Elements

It's possible to use the tablet in Photoshop Elements on your computer to interact with the program, but it's much more limited than the regular version of Photoshop and you can't work with your collection of photos if you're not connected to the Internet. The program is designed to be used with a tablet, which we cover in Chapter 6.

Image Document Mode

The image document mode determines how you work and look at the image. There's the image adjustment mode, which can be thought of as a combination of the layers (covered in the next section) and the non-layers image editing (discussed in Chapter 2).

The package includes other services, such as Adobe Creative Cloud membership.

Adobe Photoshop has been used as a graphic design tool. It also became a popular image editing software in the late 1990s. At the time, Photoshop was used by many graphic designers to compose vector graphics.

It is no surprise the program is so well suited to editing photos. In fact, there are several features specifically designed for photographers.

The program is available for many operating systems including Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux.









Adobe Photoshop Elements is an alternative to traditional Photoshop. It is a graphic editor for photographers, image editors and hobbyists. It contains most of the features of the professional version but with fewer features and a simpler user interface.

Overview

Many Photoshop Elements users use it for low-level image editing: extracting a picture from a RAW photo, cleaning it up, and other tweaks. In addition, it can be used for high-level image editing: cropping, resizing and editing color.

Key features

Adobe Photoshop Elements has many tools similar to those of Photoshop. The feature-to-feature list often omits many of the more obscure or esoteric features.

These features are mostly related to image editing and are the most important in this review. Some are only available if the user has a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud. These features include:

There is a large number of built-in filters. Photoshop Elements offers more than 250 filter functions and 600 preset filters, many of which cannot be opened in the native application. Photoshop Elements offers 50 built-in editing tools, which are simpler to use. In addition to the usual photo editing tools, Photoshop Elements has a few unique tools, such as Levels and Curves.

Old World honey bees are dying of Colony Collapse Disorder, according to a new study published in Nature today. A UK-US team led by Professor Jeremy Kerr from the University of Manchester's School of Earth and Environment, found that the famous honey bee has reached a critical level of inbreeding that is causing the decline of colonies in their native range.

Honey bees visit flowers to collect pollen and nectar for their natural food source, but they are extremely valuable to human society as they play a key role in pollination and maintain the ecosystem. They contribute to agricultural production and boost the global food supply. In 2008, the worldwide population of honey bees collapsed by 50%, and this has become a real concern for scientists and beekeepers.

The team studied bees from across the UK, from July to November 2011, by visiting hives with an analysis of worker bees, found that up to 30% of these bees were reproductively incompatible in their colonies, increasing the risk of them not contributing to breeding.

The team found that bees with two incompatible queen mates had a 60% chance of dying. They also found that up to 45% of the queens were becoming unable to lay eggs. This can occur when a queen is being chased by bees and she drops off the comb. This results in less than half of the brood being reared.

The authors also found that in Southern areas bees became inbred at a level equivalent to the UK at the end of the 19th century.

As a consequence of the honey bee population collapsing, much of the crops that require pollination are being affected. Crop production worldwide is dependent on pollination, and therefore the commercial honey bee industry contributes 1% of global gross domestic product. Recent research indicates that the commercial honey bee is the species most commonly affected by CCD, but other species are also affected.

Professor Kerr said: "The number of honey bees has been dropping steadily since its peak around 1950. We have seen a 50% drop in the world honey bee population over the last 30 years. It will be interesting to see how this is reflected in the subsequent crop pollination, as a decline in bee population is associated with a decline in crop production. We hope this study will help build the case for additional measures to help bees in the future."
